INTRODUCTION
This work "An assessment of Abu Ishaq As-sahili's Al-Manzumah" is a partial fulfilment for the Award of Bachellor of Arts in Islamic Studies at Lagos State Univeristy in 2014, examined the general over view about life of Abu Ishaq Al-sahili Al-andalusi, the author of manzumah Al-ilbiri. The various opinions of historians concerning the controversies surrounding his biography are also examined.
The historical fallacy by earlier historians and non Muslim orientalist destabilized the Islamic history and Muslim pride in Spain. This can be easily observed in the history of Granada and Abu Ishaq as well. It was mooted that he reigned between 985-1068AD meanwhile the contemporary scholars
testify his life time to be between 13th-14th century.
"By the 14th century when Mansa Musa brought Al-sahili back from Mecca and ordered him to build new masjid and palaces at Timbuktu.
The provision on literary field shows the scholarship of Abu Ishaq in Islamic skills and sciences. Indeed he is an architect by profession, Sufi by life style character which his impact cannot be ruled out in the history of West Africa, especially in the rise of Mali Empire.
The manzumah of Abu Ishaq also called Ta'hiyatu Al- Ilbiri, which revolves around the importance of seeking knowledge, also has therein other ancillary issue which facilitate unquenchable thirst for knowledge.
It is stated that Al-Sahili initially composed this poem for the purpose of reply. To are poet called Abubakar that composed satiric Poem against Abu Ishaq. We classified the whole aby'at (verses) into seven and afterword various themes and message which are:
