الْمَقَامَةُ الشِّعرية

So I was not stingy.

Nítorí náà, mi ò jẹ́ onígbòòrò.

But now, the time is grim.

Ṣùgbọ́n nísinsin yìí, àkókò jẹ́ ìbànújẹ́.

And life is filled with hardship.

Àti pé ìgbé ayé kún fún ìṣòro.

Even my attire is a disgrace.

Àní pé aṣọ mi yìí jẹ́ ìtìjú.

And my house is not even fit for a mouse.

Àti pé ilé mi kò tó fún ẹkùn.

He said: The governor's heart was moved by their words.

Ó sọ pé: Ọkàn alákòóso náà ní ìbànújẹ́ fún ọ̀rọ̀ wọn.

And he sheltered them from the harsh nights.

Ó sì gbé wọn lọ kúrò nínú àwọn òru tí ó le.

And he yearned to assist them.

Ó sì fẹ́ láti ràn wọn lọ́wọ́.

And ordered the spectators to leave.

Ó sì pàṣẹ fún àwọn olùwò láti kúrò.

The narrator said: I was eager to see the sheikh, hoping to learn his knowledge.

Olùsọ̀rọ̀ sọ pé: Mo ń fẹ́ láti rí sheikh, ní ìrètí láti kọ́ ẹ̀kọ́ rẹ̀.
