Chapter 9

الْمَقَامَةُ الْإِسْكَنْدَرِيَّةُ

111

عَطَفَ الْقَاضِي إِلَى الْفَتَاةِ. بَعْدَ أَنْ شُغفَ بِالْأَبْيَاتِ.


English

The judge turned to the young woman, after being captivated by the verses.

Yoruba

Adájọ́ yípadà sí ọ̀dọ̀mọbìnrin náà, lẹ́yìn tí àwọn ẹsẹ ewì náà ti mú un láyà.

112

وَقَالَ: أَمَا إِنَّهُ قَدْ ثَبَتَ عِنْدَ جَمِيعِ الْحُكَّامِ. وَوُلَاةِ الْأَحْكَامِ. انْقِرَاضُ جِيلِ الْكِرَامِ. وَمَيْلُ الْأَيَّامِ إِلَى اللِّئَامِ.


English

And said: Indeed, it has been established among all rulers and those in authority that the generation of the noble has become extinct, and the days have inclined towards the ignoble.

Yoruba

Ó sì wí pé: Nítòótọ́, ó ti di mímọ̀ láàrín gbogbo àwọn aláṣẹ àti àwọn tó wà ní ipò àṣẹ pé ìran àwọn ọlọ́lá ti parẹ́, àwọn ọjọ́ sì ti yí padà sí ọ̀dọ̀ àwọn aláìníyì.

وَإِنِّي لَأَخَالُ بَعْلَكِ صَدُوقًا فِي الْكَلَامِ. بَرِيًّا مِنَ الْمَلَامِ.


English

And I believe your husband to be truthful in speech, free from blame.

Yoruba

Mo sì gbàgbọ́ pé ọkọ rẹ jẹ́ olóòótọ́ nínú ọ̀rọ̀, ó sì mọ́ kúrò nínú ẹ̀gàn.

114

وَهَا هُوَ قَدِ اعْتَرَفَ لَكِ بِالْقَرْضِ. وَصَرَّحَ عَنِ الْمَحْضِ.


English

Here he has confessed to you about the loan, and declared it plainly.

Yoruba

Ó ti jẹ́wọ́ nípa gbèsè náà fún ọ, ó sì ti sọ ọ́ ní gbangba.

115

وَبَيَّنَ مِصْدَاقَ النَّظْمِ. وَتَبَيَّنَ أَنَّهُ مَعْرُوقُ الْعَظْمِ.


English

He has shown the truth of his poetry, and it has become clear that he is bare to the bone.

Yoruba

Ó ti fi òtítọ́ ewì rẹ̀ hàn, ó sì ti di mímọ̀ pé ó ti di òtòṣì pátápátá.

116

وَإِعْنَاتُ الْمُعْذِرِ مَلْأَمَةٌ. وَحَبْسُ الْمُعْسِرِ مَأْلَمَةٌ.


English

Troubling the one who offers an excuse is blameworthy, and imprisoning the insolvent is painful.

Yoruba

Níní wàhálà pẹ̀lú ẹni tó ń ṣe àwáwí jẹ́ ohun ẹ̀gàn, àti fífi ẹni tí kò ní owó sẹ́wọ̀n jẹ́ ohun ìrora.

117

وَكِتْمَانُ الْفَقْرِ زَهَادَةٌ. وَانْتِظَارُ الْفَرَجِ بِالصَّبْرِ عِبَادَةٌ.


English

Concealing poverty is asceticism, and waiting for relief with patience is worship.

Yoruba

Fífi òṣì pamọ́ jẹ́ ìwà ẹ̀mí gíga, àti dídúró de ìrọ̀rùn pẹ̀lú sùúrù jẹ́ ìjọsìn.

فَارْجِعِي إِلَى خِدْرِكِ. وَاعْذُرِي أَبَا عُذْرِكِ.


English

So return to your chamber, and excuse the father of your virginity.

Yoruba

Nítorí náà, padà sí iyàrá rẹ, kí o sì dáríjì bàbá wúńdíà rẹ.

119

وَنَهْنِهِي عَنْ غَرْبِكِ. وَسَلِّمِي لِقَضَاءِ رَبِّكِ.


English

Restrain your sharpness, and submit to the decree of your Lord.

Yoruba

Dá ìbínú rẹ dúró, kí o sì tẹríba fún ìpinnu Olúwa rẹ.

120

ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ فَرَضَ لَهُمَا فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ حِصَّةً. وَنَاوَلَهُمَا مِنْ دَرَاهِمِهِمَا قَبْضَةً.


English

Then he allocated for them a share in the charity, and handed them a handful of their dirhams.

Yoruba

Lẹ́yìn náà, ó pín ìpín kan fún wọn nínú ọrẹ-ọ̀fẹ́, ó sì fún wọn ní ẹ̀kúnwọ́ owó díńárì.
