Chapter 2

الْمَقَامَةُ الْحُلْوَانِيَّةُ

41

وَنَافَسْتُ فِي مُصَافَاتِهِ.


English

And I competed for his friendship,

Mo sì ṣe gbìyànjú láti jẹ́ ọ̀rẹ́ rẹ̀,

42

لِنَفَائِسِ صِفَاتِهِ.


English

for the preciousness of his qualities.

nítorí àwọn ẹ̀wà ìwà rẹ̀.

43

فَكُنْتُ بِهِ أَجْلُو هُمُومِي وَأَجْتَلِي.


English

With him, I polished away my worries and beheld,

Pẹ̀lú rẹ̀, mo nu ìbànújẹ́ mi kúrò mo sì rí,

44

زَمَانِي طَلْقَ الْوَجْهِ مُلْتَمِعَ الضِّيَا


English

my time with a cheerful face, radiant with light.

Yoruba

àkókò mi pẹ̀lú ojú tí ó tútù, tí ó ń dán pẹ̀lú ìmọ́lẹ̀.

أَرَى قُرْبَهُ قُرْبَى وَمَغْنَاهُ غُنْيَةً


English

I saw his nearness as kinship and his abode as wealth,

Mo rí ìsúnmọ́ rẹ̀ bí ìbátan àti ibùgbé rẹ̀ bí ọlá,

وَرُؤْيَتَهُ رِيًّا وَمَحْيَاهُ لِي حَيَا.


English

his sight as quenching and his countenance as rain to me.

ìrí rẹ̀ bí ìtura àti ojú rẹ̀ bí ojo fún mi.

47

وَلَبِثْنَا عَلَى ذَلِكَ بُرْهَةً.


English

And we remained in that state for a while,

A sì wà ní ipò yẹn fún ìgbà díẹ̀,

48

يُنْشِئُ لِي كُلَّ يَوْمٍ نُزْهَةً.


English

he creating for me each day some pleasant words,

ó ń hun ọ̀rọ̀ dídùn fún mi lójoojúmọ́,

49

وَيَدْرَأُ عَنْ قَلْبِي شُبْهَةً.


English

and warding off from my heart any doubt.

Yoruba

ó sì ń mu iyèméjì kúrò ní ọkàn mi.

50

إِلَى أَنْ جَدَحَتْ لَهُ يَدُ الْإِمْلَاقِ.


English

Until the hand of poverty mixed for him,

Yoruba

Títí ọwọ́ òṣì fi pò fún un,
