And I competed for his friendship,
Mo sì ṣe gbìyànjú láti jẹ́ ọ̀rẹ́ rẹ̀,
for the preciousness of his qualities.
nítorí àwọn ẹ̀wà ìwà rẹ̀.
With him, I polished away my worries and beheld,
Pẹ̀lú rẹ̀, mo nu ìbànújẹ́ mi kúrò mo sì rí,
my time with a cheerful face, radiant with light.
àkókò mi pẹ̀lú ojú tí ó tútù, tí ó ń dán pẹ̀lú ìmọ́lẹ̀.
I saw his nearness as kinship and his abode as wealth,
Mo rí ìsúnmọ́ rẹ̀ bí ìbátan àti ibùgbé rẹ̀ bí ọlá,
his sight as quenching and his countenance as rain to me.
ìrí rẹ̀ bí ìtura àti ojú rẹ̀ bí ojo fún mi.
And we remained in that state for a while,
A sì wà ní ipò yẹn fún ìgbà díẹ̀,
he creating for me each day some pleasant words,
ó ń hun ọ̀rọ̀ dídùn fún mi lójoojúmọ́,
and warding off from my heart any doubt.
ó sì ń mu iyèméjì kúrò ní ọkàn mi.
Until the hand of poverty mixed for him,
Títí ọwọ́ òṣì fi pò fún un,
