Chapter 10

الْمَقَامَةُ الرَّحْبِيَّةُ

31

فَقَالَ الْوَالِي لِلشَّيْخِ: إِنْ شَهِدَ لَكَ عَدْلَانِ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ.


English

The governor said to the old man: If two just Muslims testify for you.

Yoruba

Gómìnà sọ fún arúgbó náà pé: Tí àwọn Mùsùlùmí méjì tó dúró ṣinṣin bá jẹ́rìí fún ọ.

وَإِلَّا فَاسْتَوْفِ مِنْهُ الْيَمِينَ.


English

Otherwise, take an oath from him.

Bí bẹ́ẹ̀ kọ́, gba ìbúra lọ́wọ́ rẹ̀.

33

فَقَالَ الشَّيْخُ: إِنَّهُ جَدَلَهُ خَسِيًّا.


English

The old man said: Indeed, he killed him in secret.

Yoruba

Arúgbó náà sọ pé: Nítòótọ́, ó pa á ní ìkọ̀kọ̀.

وَأَفَاحَ دَمَهُ خَالِيًا.


English

And spilled his blood in solitude.

Yoruba

Ó sì ta ẹ̀jẹ̀ rẹ̀ sílẹ̀ ní ìdákọ́.

35

فَأَنَّى لِي شَاهِدٌ.


English

So how can I have a witness?

Yoruba

Báwo ni mo ṣe lè ní ẹlẹ́rìí?

36

وَلَمْ يَكُنْ ثَمَّ مُشَاهِدٌ؟


English

And there was no observer there?

Yoruba

Kò sì sí olùwòran níbẹ̀?

37

وَلَكِنْ وَلِّنِي تَلْقِينَهُ الْيَمِينَ.


English

But allow me to dictate the oath to him.

Yoruba

Ṣùgbọ́n jẹ́ kí n sọ ìbúra náà fún un.

38

لِيَبِينَ لَكَ أَيَصْدُقُ أَمْ يَمِينُ؟


English

So it becomes clear to you whether he speaks the truth or swears falsely?

Yoruba

Kí ó lè han sí ọ́ bóyá òtítọ́ ni ó ń sọ tàbí ó ń búra èké?

39

فَقَالَ لَهُ: أَنْتَ الْمَالِكُ لِذَلِكَ.


English

He said to him: You have the right to that.

Yoruba

Ó sọ fún un pé: O ní ẹ̀tọ́ sí iyẹn.

40

مَعَ وَجْدِكَ الْمُتَهَالِكِ.


English

With your overwhelming grief.

Yoruba

Pẹ̀lú ìbànújẹ́ rẹ tó pọ̀ jọjọ.
