الْمَقَامَةُ الْحُلْوَانِيَّةُ

131

حَتَّى أَنْشَدَ فَأَغْرَبَ:


English

Until he recited and astonished:

Títí tí ó fi kà jáde ó sì ya ni lẹ́nu:

سَأَلْتُهَا حِينَ زَارَتْ نَضْوَ بُرْقُعِهَا الْـ


English

I asked her when she visited, removing her

Mo bi í nígbà tí ó wá síbẹ̀, tí ó bọ́

133

قَانِي وَأَيْدَاعَ سَمْعِي أَطْيَبَ الْخَبَرِ


English

crimson veil, and entrusted my ear with the sweetest news

ìbòjú pupa rẹ̀, tí ó sì fi ìròyìn tó dùn jùlọ sí etí mi

فَزَحْزَحَتْ شَفَقًا غَشَّى سَنَا قَمَرٍ


English

She dispelled a twilight that had covered the moonlight

Ó lé ìrọ̀lẹ́ tí ó ti bo ìmọ́lẹ̀ òṣùpá kúrò

135

وَسَاقَطَتْ لُؤْلُؤًا مِنْ خَاتَمٍ عَطِرِ


English

And dropped pearls from a fragrant ring

Ó sì jẹ́ kí iyùn jábọ́ láti inú oka olóòórùn dídùn

فَحَارَ الْحَاضِرُونَ لِبَدَاهَتِهِ.


English

The attendees were bewildered by his spontaneity.

Àwọn tí ó wà níbẹ̀ se iyàlenu fún ọgbọ́n àwárí rẹ̀.

وَاعْتَرَفُوا بِنَزَاهَتِهِ.


English

And they acknowledged his integrity.

Wọ́n sì jẹ́wọ́ ìwà rere rẹ̀.

138

فَلَمَّا آنَسَ اسْتِئْنَاسَهُمْ بِكَلَامِهِ.


English

When he perceived their enjoyment with his speech,

Nígbà tí ó rí bí wọ́n ṣe gbadun ọ̀rọ̀ rẹ̀,

139

وَانْصِبَابَهُمْ إِلَى شِعْبِ إِكْرَامِهِ.


English

and their inclination towards honoring him,

àti bí wọ́n ṣe ń tẹ̀lé ọ̀nà láti bọ̀wọ̀ fún un,

140

أَطْرَقَ كَطَرْفَةِ الْعَيْنِ.


English

He lowered his gaze for a blink of an eye.

Yoruba

Ó tẹ ojú rẹ̀ ba fún ìṣẹ́jú díẹ̀.
