Al-Harith ibn Hammam narrated, saying:
Ḥárìsù ọmọ Ḥammám sọ̀rọ̀ báyìí:
I was tasked, since the amulets were removed from me,
O wun mí láti ìgbà tí wọn mú àwọn oogun ìṣọrà kúrò lára mi,
and turbans were tied upon me,

to be visiting seats of literature,
láti ma lo sí ìjoko ekọ̀ lítíréṣọ̀,
and exhaust the mounts of pursuit towards it,
kí n sì lo gbogbo agbára mi láti wá a,
so that I might cling to that which would be an adornment for me among people,
kí n lè di mọ́ ohun tí yóò jẹ́ ọ̀ṣọ́ fún mi láàárín àwọn ènìyàn,
and a rain cloud during thirst.
àti ìkúùkuu òjò nígbà òùngbẹ.
And I was, due to my excessive passion for igniting from it,
Mo sì jẹ́, nítorí ìfẹ́ àṣejù mi láti se itanafon re,
and my greed for donning its garment,
àti ojúkòkòrò mi láti wọ aṣọ rẹ̀,
discussing with everyone, great and small,
