Chapter 2

الْمَقَامَةُ الْحُلْوَانِيَّةُ

1

حَكَى الْحَارِثُ بْنُ هَمَّامٍ قَالَ:

Al-Harith ibn Hammam narrated, saying:

Ḥárìsù ọmọ Ḥammám sọ̀rọ̀ báyìí:

كلِفْتُ مُذْ مِيطَتْ عَنِّي التَّمَائِمُ.


English

I was tasked, since the amulets were removed from me,

O wun mí láti ìgbà tí wọn mú àwọn oogun ìṣọrà kúrò lára mi,

3

وَنِيطَتْ بِي الْعَمَائِمُ.


English

and turbans were tied upon me,

tí wọ́n sì wé láwàní mọ́ mi l'ori,

4

بِأَنْ أَغْشَى مَعَانَ الْأَدَبِ.


English

to be visiting seats of literature,

láti ma lo sí ìjoko ekọ̀ lítíréṣọ̀,

5

وَأُنْضِي إِلَيْهِ رِكَابَ الطَّلَبِ.


English

and exhaust the mounts of pursuit towards it,

kí n sì lo gbogbo agbára mi láti wá a,

6

لِأَعْلَقَ مِنْهُ بِمَا يَكُونُ لِي زِينَةً بَيْنَ الْأَنَامِ.


English

so that I might cling to that which would be an adornment for me among people,

kí n lè di mọ́ ohun tí yóò jẹ́ ọ̀ṣọ́ fún mi láàárín àwọn ènìyàn,

وَمُزْنَةً عِنْدَ الْأُوَامِ.


English

and a rain cloud during thirst.

Yoruba

àti ìkúùkuu òjò nígbà òùngbẹ.

8

وَكُنْتُ لِفَرْطِ اللَّهْجِ بِاقْتِبَاسِهِ.


English

And I was, due to my excessive passion for igniting from it,

Mo sì jẹ́, nítorí ìfẹ́ àṣejù mi láti se itanafon re,

9

وَالطَّمَعِ فِي تَقَمُّصِ لِبَاسِهِ.


English

and my greed for donning its garment,

Yoruba

àti ojúkòkòrò mi láti wọ aṣọ rẹ̀,

10

أُبَاحِثُ كُلَّ مَنْ جَلَّ وَقَلَّ.


English

discussing with everyone, great and small,

Yoruba

ẹni tí ó ń bá gbogbo Òní mímọ nlá ati Òní mímọ kékeré sọ̀rọ̀,
