The Moroccan Maqama

Ìtàn Àṣà Morokò

Al-Harith ibn Hammam narrated: I attended the Maghrib prayer in one of the mosques of Morocco.

Hárìsù ọmọ Hammam sọ pé: Mo lọ sí àdúrà Maghrib ní ọ̀kan nínú àwọn mọ́ṣáláàsì ní Morokò.

When I performed it with its merit and followed it with its voluntary prayer.

Nígbà tí mo ṣe é pẹ̀lú àǹfààní rẹ̀, mo sì tẹ̀ lé é pẹ̀lú àdúrà àìṣọ̀ràn rẹ̀.

My attention was drawn to a group who had secluded themselves in a corner and distinguished themselves as a pure elite.

Ìfẹ́ mi yí padà sí ẹgbẹ́ kan tí wọ́n ti yà ara wọn sí apá kan, tí wọ́n sì yàtọ̀ sí ara wọn gẹ́gẹ́ bí àwọn àgbàlagbà mímọ́.

They were engaging in the cup of competition and striking the flint of discussion.

Wọ́n ń ṣe ìdíje pẹ̀lú àrà wọn, wọ́n sì ń bá àrà wọn ṣe ìjíròrò.

I desired to converse with them for a beneficial word or an increased knowledge.

Mo fẹ́ láti bá wọn sọ̀rọ̀ fún ọ̀rọ̀ tó lè jẹ́ wúlò tàbí ìmọ̀ tí mò fẹ kó pọ̀ sí i.

So I approached them like an intruder.

Nítorí náà, mo lọ bá wọn bí ẹni tí ó ní wàhálà

And I said to them: "Do you accept a guest seeking the fruit of conversations, not the fruit of trees?"

Mo sì sọ fún wọn pé: "Ṣé ẹ̀ ń gba àlejò tí ó ń wá èso ìjíròrò, kì í ṣe èso igi?"

And seeking the salt of dialogue, not the salt of the hot ones."

Àti tí ó ń wá iyọ̀ ìjíròrò, kì í ṣe iyọ̀ àwọn tó gbóná."

They welcomed me warmly and said: "Welcome, welcome."

Wọ́n gbà mí pẹ̀lú ìfẹ́, wọ́n sì sọ pé: "Ẹ káàbọ̀, ẹ káàbọ̀."
