الْمَقَامَةُ الْبَغْدَادِيَّةُ

Al-Harith bin Hammam narrated: I attended a gathering in the outskirts of Al-Zawra.

Hárìsù ọmọ Hammam sọ pé: Mo kẹgbẹ níbi ijokó kan ní etí ìlú Sawra.

With a group of poets. No competitor could match them.

Pẹ̀lú ẹgbẹ́ àwọn akéwì. Kò sí ẹni tí ó lè bá wọn díje.

Nor could anyone compete with them in the arena.

Kò sì ẹni tí ó lè bá wọn díje nínú pápá ìdíje.

We engaged in a conversation that shamed the flowers until midday.

A ṣe ìjíròrò tí ó fi àwọn ododo hàn títí di ọsán.

When the pearls of thoughts dried up and souls yearned for nests.

Nígbà tí àwọn èrò ti tán àti àwọn ọkàn ti fẹ́ràn lati wọ àwọn àgọ́ wọn.

We noticed an old woman approaching from afar, arriving swiftly.

A rí ìyá àgbà kan tí ó ń bọ̀ láti jíjìn, tí ó sì ń dé pẹ̀lú iyára.

She had with her children thinner than spindles and weaker than doves.

Ó ní àwọn ọmọ pẹ̀lú rẹ̀ tí wọ́n kéré ju àwọn ọ̀pá lọ àti tí wọ́n sì tún jẹ́ aláìlera ju àwọn òdèré kókó lọ.

She did not hesitate when she saw us, she approached us until she was with us.

Ó kò ṣiyèméjì nígbà tí ó rí wa, ó sún mọ́ wa títí tí ó fi wà pẹ̀lú wa.

She said: May Allah greet the presents, even if they are not acquaintances.

Ó sọ pé: Kí Ọlọ́run kí àwọn ojú (àwọn èèyàn), bí wọ́n kò bá jẹ́ mọlẹbi (ọrẹ).

Know, O hope of the hopeful and refuge of the widows, that I am from the nobility of tribes and the elite of women.

Ẹ mọ̀, ẹyin ireti àwọn tí ó ní ireti àti ààbò àwọn opó, pé mo wá láti inú àwọn olórí àwọn ẹ̀yà àti àwọn obìnrin olókìkí.
