الْمَقَامَةُ الْفَارِقِيَّةُ

41

فتوهم أُم يتمالَؤون على صرفِهِ بحِرمان.ٍ أو مطالَبتِه ببرهان.ٍ


English

He imagined that they were conspiring to deprive him or demand proof from him.

Yoruba

Ó rò pé wọ́n ń gbìmọ̀ láti gbé e kúrò tàbí béèrè ẹ̀rí lọ́wọ́ rẹ̀.

ففرطَ منه أنْ قال: يا يلامِع القاع.ِ ويرامِع البِقاع.ِ ما هذا الارتِياء. الذي يأباه الحَياء؟


English

So he exclaimed: O you who shine in the depths and roam the lands, what is this hesitation that modesty rejects?

Yoruba

Nítorí náà, ó yára sọ pé: Ẹ̀yin tí ń tàn nínú ìsàlẹ̀ àti tí ń rìn ní ilẹ̀, kí ni ìdádúró yìí tí ìwà pẹ̀lẹ́ kò gbà?

حتى كأنكُم كُلّفْتم مشقّةً. لا شقّةً. أوِ استوهِبتم بلدةً. لا بردةً.


English

As if you were tasked with a hardship, not a division, or asked for a town, not a cloak.

Yoruba

Bí ẹni pé wọ́n fún yín ní iṣẹ́ tí ó nira, kì í ṣe ìpín, tàbí béèrè ìlú kan, kì í ṣe aṣọ kan.

أو هزِزتم لكِسوةِ البيت.ِ لا لتكْفينِ الميتِ؟


English

Or shaken for the covering of the house, not for the shrouding of the dead?

Yoruba

Tàbí rìnrìn fún ìbòjú ilé, kì í ṣe fún ìbòjú òkú?

أُف لمَن لا تندى صفاته. ولا ترشح حصاته !


English

Woe to those whose mountain do not soften and whose stones do not drip!

Yoruba

Ègbé fún àwọn tí àpáta wọn kọ láti dá òmí, tí àwọn òkúta wọn kò rọ̀!

فلما بصرتِ الجَماعةُ بذِلاقَتِه.ِ ومرارةِ مذاقَتِه


English

When the group saw his eloquence and the bitterness of his taste.

Yoruba

Nigbati ẹgbẹ́ náà rí ọ̀rọ̀ rẹ̀ àti kíkorò ìtọwo rẹ̀.

رفأه كُلٌ منهم بنيلِه.ِ واحتملَ طلَّه خوف سيلِه.ِ


English

Each of them supported him with their gifts, and they bore his dew for fear of his flood.

Yoruba

Gbogbo wọn ṣe atilẹyin fún un pẹ̀lú àwọn ẹ̀bùn wọn, wọ́n sì gbé òjò rẹ̀ fún ìbẹ̀rù ìṣàn omi rẹ̀.

قال الحارثُ بن همّام: وكان هذا السائلُ واقِفاً خلْفي. ومحتجِباً بظهري عن طرفي.


English

Al-Harith ibn Hammam said: This beggar was standing behind me, hiding behind my back from my sight.

Yoruba

Al-Harith ibn Hammam sọ pé: Aláìní yìí dúró lẹ́yìn mi, ó sì fi ẹ̀yìn mi bo ara rẹ̀ kúrò ní ojú mi.

فلما أرضاه القوم بسيبِهِم. وحق علي التأسي بهِم.


English

When the people satisfied him with their generosity, it was incumbent upon me to follow their example.

Yoruba

Nigbati àwọn ènìyàn yọ̀ ọ́ lọ́kàn pẹ̀lú ìfẹ́ wọn, ó jẹ́ dandan fún mi láti tẹ̀lé àpẹẹrẹ wọn.

خلَجت خاتمي من خِنصِري. ولفت إليهِ بصري.


English

I pulled my ring from my little finger and turned my gaze towards him.

Yoruba

Mo yọ oruka mi kúrò ní ika kékeré mi, mo sì yí ojú mi sí i.
