الْمَقَامَةُ الصَّنْعَانِيَّةُ

عَرَبِيَّة : وَقُبَالَتَهُمَا خَابِيَةُ نَبِيذٍ

English: And opposite them was a jar of wine

Yoruba: Níwájú wọn sì jẹ́ ìkòkò ọtí wáìnì

عَرَبِيَّة : فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: يَا هَذَا أَيَكُونُ ذَاكَ خَبَرُكَ

English: So I said to him: O you, is that your news

Yoruba: Mo sì sọ fún un pé: Ìrẹ̀, ṣé iyen ni ìròyìn rẹ

عَرَبِيَّة : وَهَذَا مَخْبَرُكَ؟

English: And this your real state?

Yoruba: Ṣé èyí ni ipò rẹ gangan?

عَرَبِيَّة : فَزَفَرَ زَفْرَةَ الْقَيْظِ

English: So he sighed the sigh of intense heat

Yoruba: Ó sì mí èémí lile bí ooru

عَرَبِيَّة : وَكَادَ يَتَمَيَّزُ مِنَ الْغَيْظِ

English: And he almost burst with rage

Yoruba: Ó fẹ́rẹ̀ẹ́ bẹ́ nítorí ìbínú

عَرَبِيَّة : وَلَمْ يَزَلْ يُحَمْلِقُ إِلَيَّ

English: And he kept staring at me

Yoruba: Ó sì ń wo mí fínnífinní

عَرَبِيَّة : حَتَّى خِفْتُ أَنْ يَسْطُوَ عَلَيَّ

English: Until I feared he would attack me

Yoruba: Títí tí mo fi bẹ̀rù pé ó le kọlù mí

عَرَبِيَّة : فَلَمَّا أَنْ خَبَتْ نَارُهُ

English: When his fire subsided

Yoruba: Nígbà tí ìbínú rẹ̀ rọ̀

عَرَبِيَّة : وَتَوَارَى أُوَارُهُ

English: And his heat disappeared

Yoruba: Tí ìgbóná rẹ̀ sì parẹ́

عَرَبِيَّة : أَنْشَدَ: لَبِسْتُ الْخَمِيصَةَ أَبْغِي الْخَبِيصَهْ

English: He recited: I wore the ragged garment seeking sweets

Yoruba: Ó sọ: Mo wọ aṣọ àkísà ní wíwá oúnjẹ dídùn
