And the envious one pitied,
Tí ẹni tí ó ń ṣe ìlara sì ń ṣàánú,
And both the speaking and the silent perished,
Tí ohun tí ó ń sọ̀rọ̀ àti ẹni tí kò sọ̀rọ̀ sì parun,
And both the envious and the abuser mourned for us,
Tí ẹni tí ó ń ṣe ìlara àti ẹni tí ó ń yọ̀ sí wa sì ń ṣọfọ̀ fún wa,
And time, the one who makes fall, befell us,
Àkókò, eyi tí ó mú ni ṣubú, bá wa,
And abject poverty.
Àti òṣì tó burú jáì.
Until we wore out our feet,
Títí tí a fi fi ẹsẹ̀ wa rin títí,
And we fed on choking,
Tí a pada wa n je egun,
And filled our stomach with ache,
Tí a sì finu rirun sinu wa,
And folded our entrails over hunger,
Tí a sì ka ìfun wa lórí ebi,
And we used sleeplessness as kohl,
Tí a sì le àìsùn bí i tìro,
