الْمَقَامَةُ الْبَرْقَعِيدِيَّةُ

عَرَبِيَّة : فَقَالَتْ: إِنَّ الشَّيْخَ مِنْ أَهْلِ سَرُوجَ

English: She said: "Indeed, the old man is from the people of Saruj."

Yoruba: Ó sọ pé: "Lóòótọ́, àgbàlagbà náà wá láti ọ̀dọ̀ àwọn ènìyàn Saruj."

عَرَبِيَّة : وَهُوَ الَّذِي وَشَى الشِّعْرَ الْمَنْسُوجَ

English: He is the one who embroidered the woven poetry.

Yoruba: Òun ni ẹni tí ó ṣe ìṣẹ́ abẹ́rẹ́ àṣà lórí ewì àṣà tí a hun.

عَرَبِيَّة : ثُمَّ خَطِفَتِ الدِّرْهَمَ خَطْفَةَ الْبَاشِقِ

English: Then she snatched the dirham like a swooping hawk,

Yoruba: Lẹ́yìn náà ó já owó náà bí àwọn ẹyẹ idì tí ń ṣọ́ ẹran,

عَرَبِيَّة : وَمَرَقَتْ مُرُوقَ السَّهْمِ الرَّاشِقِ

English: And darted away like a piercing arrow.

Yoruba: Ó sì sáré lọ bí ọfà tí a ta jáde.

عَرَبِيَّة : فَخَالَجَ قَلْبِي أَنَّ أَبَا زَيْدٍ هُوَ الْمُشَارُ إِلَيْهِ

English: My heart stirred with the thought that Abu Zayd was the one being referred to,

Yoruba: Ọkàn mi dún pé Abu Seidu ni wọ́n ń sọ̀rọ̀ rẹ̀,

عَرَبِيَّة : وَتَأَجَّجَ كَرْبِي لِمُصَابِهِ بِنَاظِرَيْهِ

English: And my distress flared up for his affliction in his eyes.

Yoruba: Inú mi sì bàjẹ́ fún ìpọ́njú tí ó ń bá ojú rẹ̀ pàdé.

عَرَبِيَّة : وَآثَرْتُ أَنْ أُفَاجِيَهُ وَأُنَاجِيَهُ

English: I chose to surprise him and converse with him,

Yoruba: Mo yan láti yà á lẹ́nu àti bá a sọ̀rọ̀,

عَرَبِيَّة : لِأَعْجَمَ عُودَ فِرَاسَتِي فِيهِ

English: To test the accuracy of my intuition about him.

Yoruba: Láti dán òye ìmọ̀ inú mi wò nípa rẹ̀.

عَرَبِيَّة : وَمَا كُنْتُ لِأَصِلَ إِلَيْهِ إِلَّا بِتَخَطِّي رِقَابِ الْجَمْعِ

English: I could not reach him except by stepping over the necks of the crowd,

Yoruba: Kò sí ọ̀nà tí mo lè gbà dé ọ̀dọ̀ rẹ̀ àyàfi kí n gún orí àwọn ènìyàn kọjá,

عَرَبِيَّة : الْمَنْهِي عَنْهُ فِي الشَّرْعِ

English: Which is forbidden in the law.

Yoruba: Èyí tí òfin kò gbà láàyè.
