الْمَقَامَةُ الدِّمَشْقِيَّةُ

He said: I do not wish to reveal myself, but I will give a clue: I am the wonder of the ages and the marvel of nations.

Ó sọ pé: Kò wunmi làti ṣe àlàyé ara mí, ṣùgbọ́n má pa òwe; Èmi ni ìyàlẹ́nu ayé àti ìyàlẹ́nu àwọn orílẹ̀-èdè.

And I am the one who maneuvered among the Arabs and the non-Arabs.

Ẹ̀mi ni eléte tí ó ṣe ète láàrín àwọn ará Arabu àti àwọn tí kì í ṣe ará Arabu.

But I am the son of need, crushed by time and swallowed.

Ṣùgbọ́n ẹ̀mí ni ọmọ òníbùkátà, tí àkókò ti fọ́, tí ó sì ti jẹ.

And the father of children who appeared like meat on a skewer.

Àti baba àwọn ọmọ tí ó hàn bí ẹran lórí ìgì.

And the brother of the needy, who, if he maneuvers, is not blamed.

Àti arákùnrin aláìní, tí bí ó bá ṣe ẹ̀tan, kò ní rí èébú.

The narrator said: Then I knew that he was Abu Zayd, the one with doubts and flaws.

Olùsọ̀rọ̀ sọ pé: Nígbà náà ni mo mọ̀ pé Abu Seidu ni, ẹni tí ó ní iyèméjì àti àbùkù.

And his face darkened by gray hair.

Àti ojú rẹ̀ tí ó dúdú nítorí irun fúnfun.

And I was displeased by the magnitude of his rebellion.

mo bínú nípa títóbi ìwà búburú rẹ

And the ugliness of his arrogance.

Àti Áìdara ìgbéraga rẹ̀.

So I said to him with a tongue of pride and the confidence of knowledge:

Nítorí náà, mo sọ fún un pẹ̀lú ahọ́n ìgbéraga àti ìgboyà ìmọ̀:
