الْمَقَامَةُ الْفرضية

Then he handed it to me.

Lẹ́yìn náà, ó fún mi.

And what was written in it:

Àti ohun tí ó wà nínú rẹ̀:

O learned scholar whose intelligence surpasses all peers.

Ẹ̀yin òní mímọ tí ọgbọ́n yín kọjá gbogbo ẹlẹgbẹ́.

Give us a verdict on a case that has perplexed every judge and baffled every jurist.

Ẹ fún wa ní ìdáhùn nípa ọ̀ràn kan tí ó ti dá gbogbo adájọ́ àti òní mímọ ní ìyàlẹ́nu.

A man died leaving behind a free, pious Muslim brother from his mother and father.

Ọkùnrin kan kú tí ó fi ẹ̀gbọ́n Musulumi kan tí ó ní òmìnira, o sì jẹ olóòótọ́ sílẹ̀ láti ọ̀dọ̀ bàbá àti ìyá rẹ̀.

And he has a wife who has a pure brother without deception.

Àti pé ó ní aya kan tí ó ní ẹ̀gbọ́n tí ó mọ́ láìsí èké.

She took her share, and her brother inherited the rest without his brother.

Ó gbà ipin rẹ̀, àti pé ẹ̀gbọ́n rẹ̀ gbà ìyókù láìsí arákùnrin ti olóògbé rẹ̀.

So heal us with the answer to our question, for it is an Order of Law with no mistake,

Nítorí náà, ẹ mú ìwòsàn wá fún wa pẹ̀lú ìdáhùn sí ìbéèrè wa, nítorí pé ó jẹ́ Òfin ẹṣin tí kò ní àṣìṣe

When I read its poetry and glimpsed its secret.

Nígbà tí mo kà orin rẹ̀, tí mò sì rí àṣírí rẹ̀.

I said to him: You have fallen upon one who knows it well.

Mo sọ fún un pé: Ẹ ti pàdé ẹni tí ó mọ̀ ọ́ dáadáa.
