الْمَقَامَةُ الْوبرية

And I implored him by God, whether he came for reconciliation or my destruction.

Mo sì bẹ̀ ẹ̀ ní orúkọ Ọlọ́run, bóyá ó wá fún àlàáfíà tàbí fún ìparun mi.

He said: God forbid that I finish off my wounded or add my poison to their heat!

Ó sọ pé: Ọlọ́run má jẹ́ kí n pa àwọn tí mo ti ṣe ipalara fún, tàbí kí n fi ìwọ́ mi kún ìgbóná wọn!

Rather, I came to inform you of your true state.

Dípò náà, mo wá láti sọ fún ọ nípa ìpò rẹ̀ gidi.

And to be a right hand to your left.

Àti láti jẹ́ ọwọ́ ọ̀tún fún ọwọ́ òsì rẹ.

At that, my agitation calmed, and my unease vanished.

Nígbà náà, ìdààmú mi dákẹ́, ìbànújẹ́ mi sì parẹ́.

I revealed to him the fruit of the palm tree and my companion's boldness.

Mo fi èso ọ̀pẹ̀ hàn án àti ìgboyà ẹlẹgbẹ́ mi.

He looked at him like a lion looks at its prey.

Ó wo bí kiniun ṣe ń wo ẹran tí ó fẹ́ jẹ.

Then he pointed his spear at him and swore by the one who lights the dawn.

Lẹ́yìn náà, ó tọ́ ọ̀fà sí i, ó sì búra ní orúkọ ẹni tí ó ń tan ìmọ̀lẹ̀ òwúrọ̀.

If he does not escape like a fly and be content with returning safely.

Tí kò bá sá lọ bí Eṣinṣin àti láti yáàra pẹ̀lú ààbò.

He will pierce his vein with his spear and cause grief to his child and beloved.

Ó máa gbá ẹ̀jẹ̀ rẹ̀ pẹ̀lú ọ̀fà rẹ̀, ó sì máa fa ìbànújẹ́ fún ọmọ rẹ̀ àti ẹni tí ó fẹ́ràn.
