الْمَقَامَةُ السنجارية

He said: "The glass is a gossip,

Ó ní: "Gíláàsì náà jẹ́ olofoofo,

And I have sworn for years.

Àti pé mo ti búra fún ọdún púpọ̀.

That I will not share a place with a gossip!,

Wí pé àyè kan kì yóò pa èmi pọ pẹ̀lú olofoofo!,

So we asked him: What is the reason for your strong oath?

Nítorí náà, a béèrè lọ́wọ́ rẹ̀: Kí ni ìdí fún ìbúra rẹ̀ tó lágbára yìí?

And your fervent vow?

Àti ìbúra rẹ̀ tó gbóná?

He said: I had a neighbor whose tongue was friendly.

Ó ní: Mo ní ọ̀rẹ́ kan tí ahọ̀n rẹ̀ jẹ́ aláyọ̀.

But his heart is a scorpion.

Ṣùgbọ́n ọkàn rẹ̀ jẹ́ àkekèé.

His words were like honey that soothes.

Ọ̀rọ̀ rẹ̀ dàbí oyin tí ń tuní.

But his hidden nature was like poison,

Ṣùgbọ́n ìwà rẹ̀ tí ó fi pamọ́ dàbí ìwọ,

So I inclined towards his companionship.

Nítorí náà, mo fẹran ìbáṣepọ̀ rẹ̀.
