Al-Harith ibn Hammam narrated: I sought refuge during some intervals.
Hárìsù ọ̀mọ̀ Hammam sọ pé: Mo gbé láàrin àwọn àsìkò kàn.
To the irrigation of the Euphrates.
Sí ìtọ́jú omi ti Furati.
I met there writers more skillful than the sons of Al-Furâti.
Mo pàdé àwọn òǹkọ̀wé tó gbóná jù lọ láàrín àwọn ọmọ ti Furati lọ́.
And with manners sweeter than the sweet water.
Pẹ̀lú àwọn ìwà tó dùn jù omi ti àládídùn.
So I surrounded them for their refinement, not for their gold.
Mo darapọ̀ mọ́ wọn fún ìṣíṣe wọn, kì í ṣe fún wúrà wọn.
And I competed with them in literature, not in banquets.
Mo bá wọn ṣe ẹ̀kọ́ ìwé wọn, kì í ṣe nínú àwọn onjẹ wọn.
So I sat with the likes of Kakaahi ọ̀mọ̀ Shuri.
Mo jókòó pẹ̀lú àwọn tí ó dá bíi Qaqaa ibn Shur.
And I reached with them to the highlands after the lowlands.
Mo dé àwọn ìlẹ̀ òkè pẹ̀lú wọn lẹ́yìn ìsàlẹ̀.
Until they included me in their pastures and gatherings.
Títí tí wọ́n fi mú mí kẹ̀gbẹ́ pẹ̀lu wọn ní àárín àwọn àgbègbè wọn àti àwọn ìpàdé wọn.
And they placed me as close as a fingertip to a finger.
Wọ́n gbé mi s'aye bíi ọ̀wọ́ sí etí-ọwọ́.
