الْمَقَامَةُ الْفُرَاتِيَّةُ

They sought his friendship and offered him their passion.

Wọ́n béèrè fún ìfẹ́ báaṣepọ̀ pẹ̀lú wọn, wọ́n sì fi ìfẹ́ wọn fún un.

But he declined companionship and had no desire for gifts.

Ṣùgbọ́n ó kọ ìbáṣepọ̀, kò sì ní ìfẹ́ sí àwọn ẹ̀bun.

He said: After you have crushed my rights because of my hardships.

Ó sọ pé: Lẹ́yìn tí ẹ ti rún àpọ́nlé mí, nítorí òṣì mí.

And you have saddened me because of my worn-out garment.

Ẹ ti kó ìbànújẹ bá ọkàn mi, nítorí aṣọ mi tí ó ti gbó.

I see you only with a disdainful eye, and all I offer you is the companionship of the ship.

N kò rí yín ayafi pẹ̀lu oju tí o gbóná (láti àrà ẹ̀kun ìbànújẹ), kò sì sí ohun tí mo lè fún yín ju ìfẹ́ ọkọ̀ ojú omi lọ́.

Then he recited: Listen, my brother, to the advice of a sincere advisor, whose pure counsel is untainted by deceit.

Nígbà náà, ó kọ: Gbọ́, arákùnrin mi, àsọ́tẹ̀lẹ̀ láti ọdọ́ olùkìlọ̀ tòótọ́, tí ìmọ̀ràn rẹ̀ jẹ́ mímọ́ kúrò nínú ẹ̀tàn.

Do not hastily judge a matter that is unresolved, in praising someone you have neither tested nor scratched.

Má ṣe yára sí iṣé kan tí kò ti di mimọ́, nínú ìyìn ẹnikẹni tí o kò ti ṣe ìdánwò fún tàbí tàbùkù rẹ.

Hold off on judgment about him until it becomes clear, whether in his pleasure or his wrath.

Ṣe sùúrù lóri ìdájọ l'ori rẹ títí tí ìròyìn rẹ yíò fi hàn sí ẹ, nígbà ìdùnnú tàbí ìbínú rẹ̀.

And let his false lightning be distinguished from his true by those who observe, and his downpour from his drizzle.

Jẹ̀ ki etímọ́ ẹ̀lẹ̀tan yàtọ̀ sí olóòótọ fún àwọn tí wọn ń wòó, àti ọjọ nlá yàtọ̀ sí òjò kékeré rẹ̀.

If you see what is disgraceful, conceal it generously, but if you see what is praiseworthy, proclaim it.

Tí o bá rí ohunkóhun tí kò dára, gbà á mọ́ ra fún ọlá; ṣùgbọ́n tí o bá rí ohun tí ó rẹwà, sọ di mímọ́.
